Binding Reeds is a research project exploring conservation practices in marshland environments. By simply binding reed bundles, diverse structures can be formed for specific purposes, creating alternative habitats for insects, birds, and humans while naturally decomposing to contribute to biomass accumulation, a key factor in marshland sedimentation and maintenance.

Originally developed for the disappearing Barene, saline islands in the Venetian lagoon, the project focuses on processual potential rather than fixed solutions. In wetland environments like the Barene, various reed species grow between salty and brackish waters. Among them, Phragmites australis, a fast-growing, grass-like reed, plays a crucial role in sedimentation, aiding in the conservation of these fragile ecosystems.

The research involved collaboration with experts in marshland ecology, land management, and traditional reed harvesting, including a Dutch family of thatchers. Their farming-based approach utilizes naturally grown Phragmites to reclaim land and build up biomass, contributing to marshland conservation as well as producing materials for vernacular architecture.

The project was presented through an installation showcasing various reed-based structures alongside a video illustrating the system in context. Developed in collaboration with Louis Möeckel and Yannis Mantzaris.
